Volunteering in the PBA

The Plano Bicycle Association is a recreational bike club completly run by volunteers, from the Board of Directors, to the ride leaders, to those individuals who give their time to work at rally rest stops, find club sponsors, cook at PBA bar-b-ques, update the web site, sweep a ride, build bikes for kids, promote the club, and a hundred other things that make this club what it is.  Each January the PBA Board is honored to recognize those individuals who stood out among the club members in devoting their time and energy to make the PBA the PBA.  The following individuals are the PBA Volunteers of the Year.  We are indebted to them.

Annual Award Winners

*** 2009 ***

  Andrew Hoodwin – Always willing to volunteer his time and energy.  Andrew looks out for others and is always cheerful. Andrew will do anything for the club and the ride leaders in particular, and he usually does it before he is asked. He knows what needs to be done and just does it.  Andrew has been a key to gaining sponsors for the club and participates in the annual Christmas bike program as well as events such as the Collin Classic rest stop.

 Greg Thurmond – Mr. "can do". Greg has contributed to many PBA projects over the past three years. He has also attended nearly every PBA Board meeting in the last three years even though he was not appointed to the board until November, 2011 as Director of Merchandising. He has also attended numerous Plano, Dallas, Frisco and Allen local government meetings related to cycling issues affecting our community. Greg was voted Volunteer of The Year two consecutive years (2009, 2010) and he has been involved in many PBA projects including: 

2008

• He organized the first PBA Tour De France Stage Watching Party at Studio Movie Grill, assisted by Andrew Hoodwin. The event was open to the cycling public, over $2,000 in prizes were raffled off at this fund raising event each year. 

2009

• PBA Trailer - He worked with Andrew Hoodwin and the Board to take Andrew’s idea of a PBA trailer from idea to reality in one short year.  
• PBA Sponsorship Program - Co-created a club sponsorship program raising over $5,000 to support the trailer purchase, graphic wrap and bike repair stand, tubes and tool.  Sponsorship came from national and local merchants as well as our bike shops.   
• Gulledge Elementary Bicycle Rodeo - worked with other PBA members to check and repair kids bikes. 
• 2^nd Annual PBA TDF Stage Watching party held at Studio Movie Grill, complete with posters created and posted at our bike shop sponsor locations. Over $2,000 in prizes were raffled off.

  They did it again!  Andrew and Greg are two talented and enthusiastic individuals that have teamed up to provide the PBA with lasting value.

• Tri-fold PBA brochure - Greg teamed up again with Andrew and John Evans to create a tri-fold PBA brochure that is available at local bike shops to promote the club and grow our membership. 
• PBA Tents – Designed and procured (2) commercial grade 10ft X 10 Ft Easy Up tents for the club. 
• Gulledge Elementary Bicycle Rodeo - worked with other PBA members to check and repair kids bikes. 
• Collin County Classic PBA Rest Stop – Towed PBA trailer to the PBA rest stop, set up tents and chairs 
• PBA Fall Century – Provided SAG support, towing the PBA trailer for the first half of the ride. 
• Christmas Bike Giveaway – Participated in building and delivery bikes to the Boys and Girls Club of Plano
