2013-05-19 | Tacos and BBQ 145k Permanent | 90.59 | 15.20 | 1,513 | Going to be another windy hot day. Started off sunny, clouds moved in, humidity moved in, clouds left, and the remainder was intense sun, intense wind, and intense heat, heightened by humidity. The wind was worse than previous day. This is a really flat route but there are slight gradients, and with headwind like we had, it might as well be the Rockies! I spent more time than I would like to admit at 8 to 10 mph - very depressing. But thought of more milk kept me going. This is an 86 mile ride but I always add 4 so i can claim UMCA credit for a century. Unlike the PBA log, which require at least 100, the UMCA only requires 90. In wind like this, I'm not going to do 1 cm more! In the past, I have added 4 more at the end. Invariably, the wind is killer and straight from the south. At the very end of course, the route goes straight south. Just as I won't do 1 cm more than I have to short of 90, the days of doing my extra miles at the end are over. Today I went west and ran out of road. Then I came back and headed east. Got the extra I needed and then headed for the Taco Bell. There was a burrito waiting for me there - and 2 pints of milk. Well, hold on. They were out of pints. Next size up I thought was a quart. I bought the quart and took it back to Taco Bell where I found out I had actually bough half a gallon. the good news is I got Gary and Dana to share it with me right after they got back from their 4 extra miles. By then, I had eaten my burrito, gotten my bottles ready, topped everything off with ice, and drank just a bit more than half the milk. I was ready to go. Of course, on a ride this short, the metabolism is not quite up to the task of putting away that much milk, so I did feel a bit full for awhile. The beating we took on wind was mostly not repeated on the way back. There was a bit more tailwind this direction, so we made it back to the start in time to get into the car and drive almost all the way home in daylight.

2013-05-19 | OAS-Lite | 49.33 | 19.50 | 0 | We missed today Alan! Despite the "Red" flag warnings, we had great smooth pace lines out to Valley Ranch, which really helped. They all twisted my arm, so up "The Wall" we went- and I am not talkin Pink Floyd. With that tailwind, the runs down Luna and other assorted northbound roads- were a blast. Great to see GaryP in the parking lot before the ride.

2013-05-19 | Ashdown Forest and the Long Man of Wilmington | 85.00 | 14.70 | 5,013 | Today I wore the same set up as Dartmoor. On occasion I did feel too warm and the gloves did come off but generally I was comfortable. So we are well into May and I’ve still only wore shorts without leg/knee warmers once this year! That’s crazy! I delayed my start owing to some rain in the air so I had no choice but to head straight to AFGC to meet Dave and Brian for coffee and egg baguettes. Good to see the guys back on their bikes again and in buoyant mood. We spent a good hour in the tea room catching up on the gossip. We then added our usual Forest Row loop before dropping into Isfield for afternoon tea and cake. Nothing much to report in between, apart from road rage involving Dave. I was keen to add some additional mileage at the end of my ride, as we were well up on time still, so I returned home via my extended Old Man loop. Didn’t feel that strong today but I was still pleased to knock out some half decent mileage and climbing with comparative ease. We seem to be doing this almost as a matter of routine now.

Missing a few stars such as Tim and Kraig but a few stars were definitely in attendance Magic Mike on his bike Rooney as always. Thanks guys for making it a truly excellent Bagel Ride! I'm so happy to still be able to ride getting a lot of pain from a leg that just won't heal :( Felt great for a couple hours after finishing. Thank y'all so much.

2013-05-19 | BnB – Sasche + commute | 56.02 | 17.20 | 0 | Only eight riders ventured out to battle the winds today, which were gusting above 20mph at the start. The forecast had the winds increasing through the day – the forecast was correct. It was tough going at times, even through the cross winds. A slight change in the route to avoid construction, found more construction, but ultimately we hit a different rest stop. Return trip was somewhat better as the winds picked up to 19-30, but some of that was tailwind up Indy. Thanks go to those who took turns up front, as most of us took a stint on point. Chris the Machine and Bionic Bob seemed reluctant to give up the front row at times – awesome job guys! With sustained winds near 20mph and gusts of 30mph, it was just way too windy today to try for more miles – even if it is my first anniversary. I started bike riding on 5/19/2012 when a 10 mile trip took 90 minutes; what an incredible 12 months it has been.

2013-05-18 | Halletsville / Flatonia 300k Brevet | 187.82 | 15.70 | 4,145 | The Houston Randonneur rides are generally my favorites - chip seal isn't as bad and the traffic is lighter. This ride heads west from Brookshire, about 35 miles west of Houston on I-10, out to Halletsville, touching San Felipe, Sealy, and Columbus on the way. I doubt many around here have heard of Hallettsville, but it is just east of Shiner and about 40 miles north of Victoria. Anyone who has done the Shiner ride knows where that is. After Hallettsville, we head northwest to Flatonia. However, the name is a misnomer – it isn’t very flat. The ride then heads due east, paralleling the westbound course until we reach Columbus, where the west and east bound routes merge. From there, it's the same course back to the start. Unlike in November, when I last did this ride, there was no rain. But it was the hottest weekend of the year, topping out at 94° in the shade, and over 100° in the sun. There was no shortage of wind, either. The good news is that we reached Halletsville before the heat and wind reached full intensity. From there, we head northwest and that takes full advantage of tailwind in places. Some of it was crosswind, too, and very stout – trying to blow us off the road. The return trip to the east, back toward Columbus and Sealy was quartering tailwind. So, we were lucky for the most part with wind. This was the hottest weekend of the year so far – humidity was intense too, making for serious discomfort. I was really looking forward to nightfall. That would mean cooler temperatures. I was consuming pediolyte and Endurolyte Fizz, mixed. That combination always saves me in serious heat. I’m still very hot on the ride, but I am not getting sick. It doesn’t reduce the misery factor very much, though. That’s why I look forward to nightfall, and I’m counting down the hours until the sun sets. Fortunately, by the time we reached Alleyton, a raft of high clouds moved in, cutting the sunlight and cooling us off about 10 degrees. The sun set shortly after we reached Sealy but we were only about 15 miles from the end, by then. We did have more headwind in the last 15 miles so we were close to the end, but had quite a bit more work to wrap it up. I didn’t eat much on the ride. Rides of this length are mostly done on liquid diet for me. Others don’t do it that way. Everyone has their own way to get through these rides. I heard that drinking white whole milk – a couple pints worth, is a good recovery drink. I have never before drunk white milk on a ride and I can’t remember the last time I’ve ever done that at any time. I gave it a try, anyway, while in Alleyton. Wow – that milk completely hit the spot. It was very refreshing and it did help to get recovery under way. I felt better the last 42 miles and felt great the next day as we started out on the Sunday ride. I was looking forward to more milk – never thought I would ever say that!

2013-05-18 | Wild Ride w/DB-2 folks | 64.53 | 19.30 | 2,641 | Very Inspriational Ride!!! Started with Brad's group an about 7 others. At the 34 mile rest stop, we have about 50-60. We were popular. Maybe it was our jerseys as it seemed that only a few were pulling including great pulls by Larry, Brad and Darrin. Somehjow we managed to lose Brad when he dropped a computer and Larry when he dropped his bottle.

2013-05-18 | OAS-Lite | 63.21 | 20.40 | 0 | Way too many peeps in the pack today. Tough getting everyone through lights, etc. Once we thinned out after Greg took his 40ers short, things smoothed out. Thanks to Team Fiat for all their work up front into the wind and running the gate. Great route by Jimmy to get us away from the WildRide. Had some great stretches out in Sunnyvale and on the run home.

2013-05-18 | 41.30 | 0.00 | 0 | Rode the Wild Ride and did the beer and burger thing again this year at my house. Also got to watch Lori conquer the 40 mile route. As was the case last year the little romp up Shilo into the wind was sporting but it was pretty easy going out so I knew I would have to pay the tab at some point. Anyway, fun day, I'll do it again.

2013-05-18 | Fast Forty Plus Commute | 49.73 | 18.90 | 1,132 | About 40 riders today with a mixture of Lite, DB1,Fast Forty and a few from the Fiat team. Pace of the ride about the same as an upper end DB1 Ride but definitely not as smooth with many surges, riders passing on the right, up the middle of the lines, etc. Fast Forty group split off at about 20 miles with about 14 riders and we enjoyed some nice rotating pace lines along the way back to the lot.

2013-05-18 | WildRide - Fight Against Cancer | 40.00 | 20.70 | 0 | Planned to do a casual ride. First 5 miles were nice and easy. Then I got into a small group that wanted to fly, fun stuff. Pulled my small group across the Dam, that hurt. I turned around at 20 miles and rode back solo - died by the end. Nice party afterwards.

2013-05-18 | WildRide! 2013 | 64.84 | 21.00 | 1,703 | They should change the name of this to Wind Ride. Came upon a horrific crash scene on the fast run north from Nevada. T&Ps for that guy. Never unclipped the entire ride, thanks to the men in blue and a bit of excellent timing. Missed Pecot, who pulled me home on Shiloh the last two years...

2013-05-18 | Fast 40 to Rowlett + commute | 41.71 | 19.20 | 1,004 | First time on the Fast Forty ride and it was strange getting back to the start at 10am. Finally over 800 miles for the year. Went out with OAS Lite which had probably close to 60 riders and participated in the paceline until we were approaching the 16-mile mark as I didn't know when Fast Forty would peel off. Turned around at 20-mile point. Wattage was typical of OAS Lite rides from last year. Pretty warm today as it was 80F before we knew it. Nice to ride at least partway with some of the crew from my rides last year. Thanks to Greg for leading! Ran 6 miles afterwards to start getting used to running in the mid-day heat. Average Power: 180W | Normalized Power: 224W (about 10% harder than typical DB1 ride)

2013-05-18 | WildRide!+Commute+Bonus = 1st 2013 Century | 100.10 | 16.00 | 0 | Rode from the house (11 miles) down to the WildRide! start and met up with Marty, Mary, Darrin, Larry, Heinz, and several others. Fast start, and picked up riders along the way. I knew we were going a bit fast, but it was fun, and started to feel it about mile 30. Limped into the rest stop behind the group (20 avg at 34 miles), refreshed, and was ready to head out when I kept hearing a rattle on my bike. A few seconds later my Cateye popped off and into the next lane. I peeled off and returned to pick it up before an oncoming car crushed it, but by that time the group was down the road and we were going into the wind. I had little chance of catching them, and the more I rode the more tired I got. Jumped on a few groups, but rode solo until the dam, where I found Larry and Steve helping Jerry change a flat. We headed out together, but my legs continued to tighten up, so I fell back and continued in solo. The slog up Shiloh into the wind was a bear, and finally made it back just after Noon. Some chocolate milk and snacks later, I rode over to Bill's to enjoy the hospitality there (and the beer, quite good), then about 1:30 left and headed further south into the wind (no fun) then east and north back to the house. Added some more bonus miles and got home just after 3PM with 100 miles in the bag. Cleaned up quick so we could head off to church, boy was I tired though. Thanks Marty, Larry, Darrin, and others for the help up front the first 34, wish I could have finished with you, but I doubt the way I was feeling I could have kept up the entire way back.

2013-05-18 | Wild Ride 100k | 64.72 | 19.20 | 2,260 | First group ride in over a month and boy, was it fun! DB2 group met for the Wild Ride and started with 8ish riders. Good pace (20.3 by my garmin)to the 35 mile rest stop. Left the stop with many riders who must have known our yellow jerseyed leaders rocked. Our group fell apart a bit after that, but we had a lot of hangers on. Thanks to Marty, Brad, Darrin, Larry, Scott, Gene, Jerry, Heinz and others who looked out for me and shielded me from the wind. Great day! |
