Was able to execute a good bike leg in today's sprint triathlon! My garmin had 22.3mph as my average, but official race results said 22.8mph so I'll take that! I was able to stay just right at threshold (and a little beyond at times) and felt pretty good. One thing that helped was I thought about my spare wireless bike computer on my 2nd road bike that I haven't been using and put it on the aerobars so I had something to look at for cadence and heart rate info. Also helped to have the average speed showing and just working to keep the "up" arrow lit up (which indicates that I was going faster than my current average). I stayed up late trying to find a magnet to work on the wheel sensor (as that bike computer had no GPS). Yes, I know I have a Garmin 910xt on my wrist but it's hard to keep looking at it when riding in aero. I also learned my lesson from my first race about latex tubes in tubular wheels (especially my rear wheel) and made sure to pump up my tires when we arrived at the race location. I was confident that I had the the right tire pressure in there for a change. No problems in transition and was able to get my feet in my shoes without much trouble this race. I probably could've retightened the straps a bit but it was ok. Only incident was dropping the chain at one of the sharp turns that was right after a downhill. The previous night, I noticed that when I had the largest cog in the back and the big chain ring up front, my chain wasn't fully seating on the chain ring (the chain is due for replacement anyway). I told myself that I wasn't going to mess around with it and just avoid that combination (by using the small chain ring and something in the middle of the cassette). However, I forgot about it during that sharp turn and downshifted to that combo and the chain dropped to the outside. I tried to channel Bradley Wiggins (for those of you who saw his recent time trial where he dropped a chain and remained calm and got his support car to put it back on). I didn't have a support car so I shifted the front to the small chain ring and slowly pedaled. I was lucky and it caught and only lost a probably 5-10 seconds at most. I was almost resigned to getting off the bike and fixing it! I was only passed by 1 person on the bike (and I incidentally had a great run race with him also as we left transition at almost the same time) and after he passed me, I kept him in sight (it's nice to have a carrot to chase). Ended up with the 8th fastest bike split overall (out of 197 participants). I ended up taking 1st in my age group (which was the largest one!) combining that with a good run leg and was able to do some damage control on the bad swim. 13th overall (and was within 30 seconds of 9th overall). A good race for me! (Congratulations to Lesan who took not only an AG podium but also 9th overall female on her first race back since last summer). I think her 19.4mph avg surprised her.
