The trouble with doing writeups a week+ after the ride, is recalling what happened! It was a hot day, 100+ at the hottest, but wind was very light. That last fact made the ride relatively easy - certainly the easiest for me on this particular course. We made good time from Willow park to Granbury, good time to Glen Rose, and pretty good time to Walnut Creek and Iredell. From Iredell, we rode straight down highway 6 to Clinton. This part I didn't enjoy much because it is highway shoulder on a busy highway. But there is nice scenery in places. We chowed down on Burger King burgers at the convenience store "in-house" fast food place. I wasn't having much success stuffing down the burger - they didn't put the good sauce on it that I like and it was a little dry. From Clinton to Cranfills Gap was lots of climbing, temperature steady above 100°, and indication of overheating in this stretch. Once at Cranfills Gap, I needed some recovery from the heat and rested, consumed lots of liquid, and got my bottles and Camelbak prepared for the next section, with lots of ice. I also tried something I hadn't previously done - an ice sock. I filled the sock with ice, tied it off, and wrapped it around my neck. Now, last year I used a cooling vest on days like this; the ice sock worked far better toward keeping my core cooled off. The ice was melting through the sock, sending rivulets of cold water down my chest, back, and arms. It took the heat stress I suffered completely away, and I soon felt completely recovered. Of course I was drinking steadily from my ice filled bottles and camelbak, keeping the calories coming in and chasing with ice cold water. Our next stop was Hico. I tried to eat another hamburger but no real success - got about a third of it down. I am drinking my calories on these rides, but animal protein on the longer rides does keep my legs from aching. Now it is Hico to Bluff Dale. This portion of the ride is about half serious climbing. The second half is in an area sometimes referred to as the north Texas Hill Country. I enjoy it, though because momentum of a downhill can sometimes carry me a good way up the next climb. Bluff Date is on 377, down a 10% hill for about a mile. I always try to position myself not to have to share the road with any cars and managed that this time, too. I never pedal hard on the downhills, but momentum carried me to a 38.3 max speed for the entire ride. At Bluffdale I had a little issue with my Garmin battery extender. Instead of powering my Garmin, it went to charge mode, meaning it cleared my data and stopped recording. I was able to get it going again, but it also didn't backlight my screen, so I wasn't able to see my ride stats as i was riding. Fortunately, I know all the turns from Bluff Dale to Lipan, our next stop, so that wasn't a huge issue. I do have a gap of 1.5 miles in my recording and the Garmin link posted isn't the entire route - the "next" record shows the conclusion of the ride. The goal for Lipan was to get there before they close. That we did, easily, arriving there at 10 PM, an hour before close. But our stop was too long, I thought - 40 minutes. It's hard to get going after such a long stop. From Lipan, we take SR 4 toward Granbury but turn to the north at Thorpe Springs, up Tin Top Rd. The store at Tin Top was closed, but we had some water stashed there so the stop was worthwhile. Tin Top was our last stop on the way to Willow Park. By this last section, I had major hot foot issues and needed to stop very frequently to take care of that. Fortunately the group wasn't going that fast, so I could always catch up. The hotfoot issue was so bad, I cancelled my plans for a Sunday Tempo ride. I decided instead, to sleep in on Sunday. I needed the sleep, so that wasn't a bad idea.
