Keiko and I did the highlight of our cycling vacation to New Mexico by riding 71.2 miles from Albuquerque to Santa Fe via the Turquoise Trail (Rt 14). I had not done this in over 30 years and I forgot how tough it was. We started at Mom’s house at about 4900 feet and by the time we left town we had already climbed over 1,000 feet. Then we climber from there to Sandia Park at over 7,000 feet where we took a break at the gas station and talked to all of the riders who were pulling in for a rest stop. Most of the riders pulling in were getting ready to ride the 10 miles to the top of Sandia Crest at over 10,000 feet! Then back on the road as the highway went up and down between 6,300 to 7,000 feet over and over again!! Finally at about mile 40 we started another climb to 7,000 feet for 5 miles and then a 5 mile descent back to 6,000 feet in to Madrid. We decided to take lunch in Madrid and my GPS stopped working so I only showed 50 miles on my Map but Keiko’s Gamin kept on ticking!! We pulled out of Madrid and dropped another 300 feet in to a bright sun shine filled desert cauldron with temperatures over 100 degrees. But I will take 100 degrees in the desert with 19% humidity over 85 degrees in DFW anytime. Then we started the final 21 mile, 1000 foot ascent in to Santa Fe and back to 6,700 feet. The entire week I was checking the winds and it seemed like the prevailing south winds were going to give us a tail wind the entire 71 miles, but no!!! The day of the ride the wind came out of the north so we ended up with a head wind for the entire ride!! Many thanks to Amanda and Heather and the B2 team for getting us ready for this adventure!!
