This was a very, very tough ride, due to the heat, I didn't have such a hard time as I am acclimated to the heat, and between using pediolyte and an ice sock, I was set not to have much difficulty. My friend James was here from the UK, and he did the ride with me. He had a very tough time as he is not atl all acclimated, nor is he used to doing longer rides. The going was OK for the first 65 miles. We started in Greenville, and rode through Celeste, Leonard, took on the Leonard Hills, to Ector, and then crossed the Red River at the Carpenter's Bluff one lane, old railroad bridge. Our 65 mile point was in Achille OK. When we left Achille, with bikes having been parked in the shade, the temperature was 108°. The stretch from Achille back to the Red River, via OK state hwy 78, is practically devoid of trees (therefore no shade) and James was in real need of a break, about 10 miles from Achille. Fortunately, we passed a grassy area with some small trees, near the road, and we pulled off there for break in the shade. By then, the temperature had risen to 109°. After about 15 minutes, we got underway again, and managed to get across the Red River at the Sowell's Bluff crossing. Once across the river OK SH 78 becomes TX SH 78 and a quarter mile past the river, we noticed a new gas station/convenience store. By then, the temperature had risen to 110° and James was in desperate need of refreshing cool air and cool drink. We were there probably 40 minutes, recovering enough to make the 9 miles to Bonham. This is where we started using the ice sock (Achille didn't have any ice available). This was a saviour for James! It made all the difference! Leaving Bonham, it was beginning to cool off. It had dropped from 110° to 106° by Bonham, and we made better time continuing south. We were now headed to Wolfe City, another 21 miles distant. We take 78 south until FM 271, turning toward Bonham Lake State park, but bypassing the state park. There are a few hills in this stretch but nothing too serious. Finally, we reach a turn onto FM 68 and James and I take another break on the shady side of the Post Office at that intersection. From there, we continue on to SH 34, which takes us to Wolfe City. By the time we left there, it was 8:15 PM and would get dark soon. The setting sun was excellent news, as the absence of sun beating down on us made for much morecomfortable riding, even though the temperature remained in the upper 90s. Fortunately we had lights and the remaining miles back to Greenville were relatively pleasant. James was a little heat sick even in the reduced temperature we had at the end. It's fortunate this ride wasn't any longer than 131 miles. He wouldn't have been able to carry on much longer.
